Luna’s mom was one of the many heroic souls who answered @oaklandanimalservices urgent call for fosters when the shelter-in-place orders were issued in March. Naturally, she failed, but can you blame her? Even the Grinch would fail at fostering this little cutie, with her giant green eyes and silky blue fur. She even has a giant personality packed into her petite frame. Some of the most successful people stress how important their failures were in achieving their goals. Maybe it’s time we all learned to fail in the best way possible. My Kitty Corner family grew a little bit smaller yesterday when handsome goofball Naranjito crossed the rainbow bridge after a large inoperable tumor was discovered in his lungs. Naran and his big sister Pandora (who passed away last year) had been regulars of mine since my first Thanksgiving in 2014. Naran was missing quite a few teeth, which made him pretty derpy because his tongue kept falling out. Sometimes, he’d have to smack his mouth with his paws to get it back in place, which was both heartbreaking and funny. He had an overwhelming hatred of the sparkle wand I brought him on one of my first visits. Every time I waved it around he’d hiss and spit at it before trying to destroy it. Naran had a collection of stuffed turtles that he loved to kick around. He often kicked them under the stove and waited for someone to rescue them. One evening, he wouldn’t stop staring beneath the stove and when I bent down to investigate, I discovered his entire collection of stuffed turtles sitting and awaiting rescue! He loved to chase down Greenies treats as I tossed them around the living room. Being a pirate cat, he lacked a bit of depth perception, so he often misjudged how far his treats travelled, causing him to kick them even farther. Watching him chase his treats was like watching a Charlie Chaplin short. This little guy brought so much joy into my packed schedules. I feel very blessed to have had the honor of caring for him when his people were gone. And I am so grateful they let me pop by to say one last goodbye to him on Thursday. Rest In Peace, Nare Bear...and be nice to Pandora when you meet her across the Bridge! 😿😢🌈💕

Please keep this handsome lion, Chester, in your thoughts and prayers this weekend. He’s the beloved companion of my friend @kitty_karma_girl. His vigilant mama noticed his breathing was raspy and labored this evening, so she rushed him to the emergency vet where he was diagnosed as being in congestive heart failure. They’re hoping it was caught early enough to save him, but he will be staying overnight for observation. 🤞🙏❤️

Just thought it was important to share that thought. Things are weird right now and I’m sure Buddy isn’t the only one feeling it. Take care of yourselves. Cry if you need to cry. Rage if you need to rage. Just remember to be safe. And that Buddy loves you.

Sound up to hear some happy chirps from Buddy the Bengal. With everything that’s happened in this nation over the last week, I haven’t wanted to clutter up social media with cats. It just seemed that there were more important voices out there that needed room to be heard. I’m very grateful for everyone who has been raising their voice, sharing their stories, and making it clear to our leaders that we are desperate for change. I hope we, as a society, don’t stop listening to those voices. I also hope we, as individuals, can continue to reflect upon and confront our own prejudices and the ways our actions or inactions contribute to oppression. We can do better. We can be better. And I am posting Buddy’s happy chirps to provide a little ray of sunshine amidst all the sadness out there right now. Because I honestly don’t know how to get through the day without cats to lift my spirits.

Yes, you CAN be the rescue! This weekend, I had the pleasure of helping another motivated community member help a feral Cat family. When this young mama and her 3 babies moved into Ryan’s backyard, he knew he had to get her fixed and find homes for the kittens. His main obstacle? Getting a spay/neuter appointment at the start of kitten season during a pandemic. He eventually found @feralchange and I went out last night to set my traps. Ryan waited and watched from a safe distance as I set them. When it became clear that I was only going to get mama and one baby last night, he happily volunteered to keep the drop trap set up and ready to drop in the morning when he fed the remaining two kittens - and he got them! He and his partner also arranged for a friend of theirs to foster and socialize all three little babies. I happily dropped the kittens off with their foster parents and loaned them some of my fostering supplies and will continue to provide guidance to them as they figure out how to get the kittens fixed and rehomed - on their own. Feral Change, like many other rescues, is facing a severe shortage of resources right now, while still trying to TNR multiple large (30+ cat) feral colonies in Oakland, and they weren’t able to take these 3 little ones into their small foster program. Like most rescuers, I’m always happy to provide guidance to anyone who is willing to put in the time and effort to be their own rescue, though. Because there are way too many people out there who want someone else to handle their problem or who simply try to ignore it. Problems won’t solve themselves and there aren’t enough problem-solvers in the world to solve everyone’s problem for them. When we figure out what small parts we, as individuals, can do to solve our problems, then it makes it easier for others to help. And , yes, WE DEFINITELY NEED MORE SPAY/NEUTER CLINICS IN THE BAY AREA! #cats #catsofoakland #catsofinstagram #tnr #rescue #foster #savealife #beyourownrescue
