Gandalf is now my temporary house guest…because

Gandalf is now my temporary house guest…because apparently 6 cats isn’t enough and I needed to add one more, even if it’s just for a week or two. He was neutered yesterday at @fix_our_ferals and they noted he was dehydrated and had horrible, stinky diarrhea — which is probably due to intestinal parasites. I think he’s probably adoptable, based on the limited interactions I’ve had with him, so the plan is to treat his parasites, find him a longer-term foster home, and then find his forever home. Since he will need medication and since I’m not quite sure what his tolerance level is for being handled, I chose to crate him within my foster room. This ensures I will be able to grab him fairly easily to give him his medicine. It also helps keep him away from my cats so they won’t get his parasites and it ensures that I can keep some windows open to air out his room - parasite poop is the worst! Gandalf is an older kitten who showed up a few months ago at one of the sites I TNR’d earlier this year. His caretaker contacted me 2 months ago about trapping him, but doing rescue work during the peak travel months isn’t really feasible for me. I didn’t even have time tonight to trap this guy; I told the caretaker he had to do it himself and I dropped a trap off with him earlier this week and showed him how to set it up. Gandalf’s caretaker is a busy guy with a family. He’s not a cat guy, but he’s dedicated to doing right by the cats who started living in his back yard last year…and any other cats who might join them. Thanks to him, little Gandalf will be getting fixed tomorrow, courtesy of @feralchange and @fix_our_ferals. It really does make a huge difference when someone steps up and learns what they can do to help solve a problem instead of just asking someone to solve it for them.

There’s been so much bad news in the world latel

There’s been so much bad news in the world lately that I’ve been finding it hard to keep my spirits up. So how about a happy tail to bring some light into this dark, smokey world? This handsome house panther is Grackle. I met him on a sunny afternoon in March (or maybe it was April?) when @felinefellow was showing @kirstincummings and I around an Oakland Housing Authority site he’d been doing TNR at for the last few years. We were part of a team that was going to help trap the next day. Grackle was sitting patiently on the sidewalk in front of one of the units watching us. Every time we came close he trotted to us hopefully. He was very skinny and had a large wound on his back leg. As we were wrapping up, Andrew spoke with the woman who lived in the unit where Grackle was sitting near and confirmed that he wasn’t one of her cats. So, he grabbed a trap from his car and set it down on the sidewalk in front of Grackle. I took some treats from my bag and made a trail intro the trap. Grackle started eating the treats and when he was half way in the trap, I gave him a gentle push all the way in and closed the front. He was so calm inside! It’s like he knew good things were coming. Later that night, I saw that @lindsayrunsonplants had taken him in to foster for @feralchange while his leg wound healed. My heart burst with happiness…and, then, when he became a permanent part of her family, I was over the moon! Now I get to sit for him and be reminded - despite all the sadness in the world - of the difference one act of compassion can make in the life of another…and how amazing it is to foster and fall in love with an animal you otherwise wouldn’t have met.
